Institute needs Farm Supervisor |
Position Available
Farm Supervisor
Esalen Institute, the
pioneering educational organization dedicated to personal and social
transformation, is now hiring for the position Farm Supervisor who
fulfills a leadership role in a five-acre farm, providing the Esalen
kitchen with fresh produce on a daily basis. The team is composed of
work scholars and interns who are there for a period between one month
and one year.

Responsibilities
- Supervising Five-Acre
Organic Production and Educational Farm:
- Co-management of crew
(apprentices, work scholars, volunteers, etc) ranging
from
2-8 people five days per week
- Co-management of daily
harvest for Esalen kitchen;
- Co-management of
fertility, pest management, materials organization,
oversight
of weekly cultivation, soil development, plantings
(transplant
and
direct seed), and routine maintenance for the Farm
- On-going development of
Farm edges
- Re-design of Farm access
and use for labor efficiency and better land
stewardship
practices
- Oversight of extra
production and exploration of new income avenues
in
relation to grants, farm stands and value added products;
i.e. seed
saving,
plant sales, lawn sales, etc.
Job Summary
- Oversight and management
of kitchen waste and compost operation
including
management of organic and green waste.
Teaching Sustainable
Agriculture Training Sessions for Apprentices:
- Co-creation of
educational syllabus, schedule, readings, and
assignments;
- Creation of supporting
educational documents and materials;
- Co-development of
individual session content and logistical
preparation;
- Leading individual
sessions, including lecture and hands-on
exercises;
- Supporting logistics for
other sessions taught by Farm & Garden
staff.
Collaboration on Departmental
Short and Long Term Planning:
- Co-facilitating weekly
department operation meetings;
- Development of long-term
systems for efficient and effective farm
management
(planting schedules, production goals, cultivation,
irrigation,
materials
ordering, etc);
- Participation in daily,
weekly, and monthly departmental meetings
and
supporting activities (process, off-site trips, etc).
Collaboration and Support for
Farm and Garden based workshops and
programming (Experiencing
Esalen, etc).
Experience &
Qualifications
- Leadership experience in
a farm/garden using self-sustainability
methods;
- Knowledge of irrigation
systems, composting techniques, pest control,
weed
control;
- Teaching skills,
communication skills, time management, prioritizing
and
delegating;
- A thorough understanding
of organic gardening principles and
practices;
- 3 years experience
working in a production garden or equivalent
training;
- Working knowledge of
plant families and varieties in commercial
organic cultivation and
optimal growing conditions, including vegetables,
flowers,
herbs, natives, perennial crops;
Skills
- Crop planning and
scheduling, plant propagation, soil preparation, and
nutrient
monitoring;
- Demonstrated ability to
work collaboratively with people of diverse
backgrounds
in various situations;
- Staff scheduling and
crew supervision;
- Ability to work with
kitchen and other customers to ensure prompt
delivery
of requested produce;
- A demonstrated sense of
garden aesthetics;
- Ability to communicate
effectively and positively with staff,
management,
community, and guests
- Demonstrated ability to
safely lead and participate in physically
demanding
work on uneven terrain;
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties
of this job, the employee must be able to
maneuver on uneven ground,
drive trucks and tractors, often carry and lift
up to 60 pounds, handle and
use tools and machinery, and ability to do
physical garden/farm work
including harvesting, hoeing, stake
pounding/pulling, digging.
Many of the activities require bending over,
kneeling, and sitting on
uneven ground during cold and hot weather
conditions. There is some
exposure to dust, fumes, gas and chemicals.
Compensation
The wage range for this
position depending on experience is $12 - $15/hour plus a
comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental,
and paid time off. If living on Esalen property, a salary
adjustment will be made for receiving furnished housing plus
full service meals. Esalen provides staff with access to an
